Events on the Outer Banks l August 2014

Don't let Summer pass you by without getting down to the Outer Banks! August is a wonderful month to visit, but then again I think every month is a wonderful month to visit! As the last month of Summer, August is jam packed with events and things to do. From movies, to performances, to concerts, to art shows, there is something that will spark everyone's interest.

Character Dinner at The Lost Colony

June 6th - August 20th l Waterside TheaterEvery Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the Summer, there will be opportunities to enjoy a Pre-Show Character Dinner. Gates to the Waterside Theatre open at 6P.M. with dinner at 6:30. You end the night with a private back stage tour and curtains open at 8P.M. Great way for the kids to interact with the characters!

The Lost Colony

May 30th - August 22nd l Waterside TheaterOver 200 actors, designers, and volunteers make show what it's known for, an amazing performance. From the epic battles, to the Indian dances this show will keep you on the edge of your seat all night long. Show times are every night of the Summer except Sunday nights.

Minty Tuesday

April 10th - August 26th l Elizabethan GardensLocated at the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island and free with paid admission. Children ages 6-12 years old will learn all about mint. They will make mint rubbings, learn to plant mint in a take home pot, and enjoy mint cookies and mint flavored ice cream. What better way to cool off with all things mint for the day!

Red Wolf Howlings

July 4th- August 27th l Creef Cut Wildlife TrailThis is the only place in the world where Red Wolves still exist in the wild. You meet every Wednesday at the Creef Cut Wildlife Trail parking lot for a chance to hear the howling of this endangered species, all in harmony. $10 per person and goes from 7:30 - 9:00. Children under 12 are FREE!

Movies on the Sound

August 1 l Duck, NCTonight features the movie Iron Giant. This will be the last of the Movies on the Sound series being held in Duck. After tonights show the series moves to COA Campus for the rest of the month of August. Pack a picnic, blanket, beach chairs, and enjoy an outdoor movie together as a family. Don't forget the bug spray!

Jars of Clay

August 3 l Waterside TheatreGrammy award winning artist Jars of Clay will be performing at the Waterside Theater on Roanoke Island. They are a Christian rock band reigning from Nashville, Tennessee. Tickets are available online, and show starts promptly at 8P.M. Perfect family friendly band for all ears.

OBX Sandbar 5K

August 3 l Kitty Hawk, NC13th Annual Sandbar 5k. This is an out and back course along the beaches of Kitty Hawk. Beginning at the Kitty Hawk bathhouse by Black Pelican. Participants run down to Eckner Street on the beach and return to the bathhouse for the finish. Proceeds benefit the Outer Banks Relief Foundation.

Faire Days

Every Wednesday l Scarborough Faire Shopping VillageEvery Wednesday, all Summer long is Scarborough Faires Faire Days. From 1 - 6 P.M, the boardwalks of Scarborough Faire will open up and welcome in all types of food, live entertainment such as juggling and magicians, and much more! This is a free event open to the public and guests of the Outer Banks.

Outer Banks Watermelon Festival

August 7th l Jockey's Ridge CrossingThis event is free and open to the public. Located at Jockeys Ridge Crossing, Kitty Hawk Kites put on all kinds of events and activities that are anywhere from $1-$10 to participate in. Proceeds from the Watermelon Festival go to the Wright Flight of NC. This program rewards 5th graders that achieve their academic goals with flight!

Concert in Duck Town Park: Mamas Black Sheep

August 7th l Duck, NCThis is a beautiful evening concert series featuring a variety of music that is great for the whole family. Movies on the Sound

August 8, 15th, 22, 29 l Manteo, NCBeginning August 8th the Movies on the Sound Summer series will begin playing at the College of the Albemarle Campus on Roanoke Island. Tonights featured movie is Despicable Me. They welcome you to pack a picnic, blanket, chairs for the family and make a night of it, enjoying an outdoor movie together.

New World Festival of Arts

August 13 & 14 l Manteo, NCThe beautiful town of Manteo welcomes you to this 2 day juried event featuring 80 hand-selected artists from Vermont all the way down to Florida. This will be the best of the best along the East Coast. Each artist will have their pieces of work on display & for sale all along the Manteo Waterfront.

Concert in the Duck Town Park: Violent Mae

August 14th l Duck, NCEvery Thursday throughout Summer the Town of Duck hold a concert on the Duck Town Green across the street from Kellogs and Red Sky Café. Tonights band is the Violent Mae. All concerts are family friendly. Bring your chairs, a blanket, a picnic, and enjoy the live music as the sun sets over the ocean.

Outer Banks Pirate Festival

August 13 - August 15 l Jockey's Ridge CrossingJoin Kitty Hawk Kites at this free event to the public. It begins Wednesday August 13th and goes until Friday the 15th. Listen to the story telling as they take you back in time to piracy on the Outer Banks. This is the time to enjoy everything pirate from reenactments, pictures with them, and much more!

BIC SUP One Design Regionals

August 16th l Maneto, NCKitty Hawk Surf Co. is this seasons host to the BIC SUP One Design Series. This is a family friendly competition and is free to the public. Whether youre paddling out there yourself or cheering on family members, this is a great event for everyone. Welcome all skill levels. Located at the Kitty Hawk Kites in Manteo.

Magnolia Art Market

August 16th l Manteo, NCLocated at the Magnolia Pavilion. This is a combination of Outer Banks locals coming together and sharing their knowledge and skills. At the beautiful open air pavilion in downtown Manteo artists will display their pieces from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M the Thursdays of August 16ththrough September 1st.

Mary Stuart & The Fabulous Superlatives in Concert

August 17th l Manteo, NCLocated at the Waterfront Theater. This 5-time Grammy winning, platinum recording artist, Grand Ole Oprey singer and star has made his way to the Outer Banks with his fabulous Superlatives. Located at the waterfront at Manteo, the views and sounds throughout the night are the perfect Outer Banks evening.

National Aviation Day

August 19th l Kill Devil Hills, NCFun for all at the Wright Brothers Memorial where they will be celebrating National Aviation Day. From flying kites, to book signings, to flight room talk, it will be a knowledgeable and exciting day for the whole family. Park fees will be waived for this event and welcomes everyone interested in flight.

Concert on the Duck Town Green: Spare Change

August 21st l Duck, NCEnjoy a few of the many perks when it comes to staying in duck. One, walking distance and two, free live music. Every Thursday the town of Duck holds a free concert for the whole family to enjoy, and this Thursday Spare Change is playing. They take the stage at 6:30P.M. and welcome you to the town lawn to join them!

Surfing for Autism

August 22 - 23 l Jennette's PierWhat an amazing event! Free for all spectators and welcoming all volunteers, kids, and parents. As I attended this event last year, I stood on the beach with chills as I watched these kids stoked on the opportunity to ride a wave. Each child will be paired with 2 volunteers. Food, beverages and more available all day.

WRV Outer Banks Pro

August 29 - September 2 l Jennette's PierThe Outer Banks is one of the best surf spots on the East Coast. WRV (Wave Riding Vehicles) has always stood for surfing and spreading the spirit of Aloha it brings to many. By doing so they pride themselves in bringing such a big surfing competition to the Outer Banks. This event is free for all spectators and welcomes you to watch the guys paddle it out for $30,000 in prizes.
