April is a beautiful month down here on the Outer Banks. On top of the beautiful Spring temperatures, our list of April events will keep you coming back all month long. From Historical Flat Top tours, to a Duathalon, to OBX Bike Week, there is something for everyone this month.
Southern Shores Historic Flat Top Cottages Open House

Beginning at 11AM, the author of "Outer Banks Architecture", Marimar McNaughton, will speak at the Southern Shores Town Hall Complex. Shortly after is when the tour will start at 1PM and include a variety of the town's historic flat tops. It begins at 156 Wax Myrtle Trail where tickets ($5 donation) can also be purchased. The tour travels through many flat tops located along the oceanfront, oceanside, and in the dunes. Including our very own properties: #573 Toute De Suite and #262 Dunne's Dune.
Salad Container Gardening

Let the experts teach you how to grow the freshest lettuce around town in a space saving container. Elizabethan Gardens supplies the containers, soil, and plants for your starter garden. The best it yet to come, but in the mean time a fresh salad will be served for lunch to all participants. This workshop usually fills quickly every year, so be sure to get your foot in the door now. Sea Turtle Egg Hunt

Learn about one of the Outer Banks' most endangered species at the North Carolina Aquarium. The sea turtle is a rare and beautiful site. First, everything begins with a sea turtle program. They will come face-to-face with a loggerhead turtle, and also make a craft to take home. Ending the day with an Easter egg hunt right on Aquarium grounds. This event is a rain or shine event. Cost is $13/child or $10/aquarium member. Event is April 12th at 2PM, April 19th at 9:30AM, and April 19th at 11:00am.
Outer Banks Duathalon

Run. Bike. Run. You start the first run going through South Nags Head, then a 20 mile bike ride through Pea Island which includes Bodie Island Lighthouse and Oregon Inlet. Lastly, your second 5k run finishes back at Jenette's Pier in Nags Head. There is a beach cruiser division and an alternate ending for runners who have difficulty running on the sand. Fly Into Spring & Easter Eggstravaganza

It all begins with the Kite Festival flying high at Jockey's Ridge State Park Friday and Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Bring the family and get out and enjoy Jockey's Ridge while it isn't too hot to stand, fresh spring air and some of the coolest kites on the Outer Banks. The Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Jockey's Ridge Crossing and starts at 11AM. The hunt will be broken down by age groups, and keep your eyes pealed for the golden egg! The Easter Bunny is also stopping by from Noon - 1PM. All events are free to the public and welcome all families to join!
OBX Go Far Bunny Hop 5k & Jelly Bean Fun Run

This year, they want you to color more than Easter eggs. Make a goal with your kids at the 4th Annual Bunny Hop and Fun Run. Instead of staying home painting Easter eggs, paint yourselves like an Easter egg while being active and achieving a goal together. Celebrate Easter with color powder at the start, throughout the course, and as you cross the finish line. By running you will be supporting a program put in place to fight childhood obesity. Post race party will be held with pancakes and beverages for all participants. Don't want to go as far as a 5k? Not a problem, the Fun Run is also the same day and goes the distance of 1 mile. Price after April 2, 2014 are $39/individual.
12th Annual Outer Banks Bike Week

The 12th annual Bike Week is a 7 day event of cruising the beach road and enjoying the beautiful views of the Outer Banks. Many restaurants welcome the bikers of Bike Week by offering specials all week long. With Poker Runs, guided tours, tattoo contests, and live music, it's always a good time for the bikers. There will also be outdoor concerts throughout the day, pig pickins, and dinner specials at night - it's a 7 day event from sun up to sun down.
Student Art Show Reception at Duck Town Hall

This is one of a series of art exhibits that will be displayed at the Duck Town Hall. It includes 33 pieces of artwork by students from all over Dare County, including First Flight Elementary, Middle, and High School, Manteo Elementary, Middle, and High School, Kitty Hawk Elementary, Nags Head Elementary, and Hatteras Elementary. The artworks were chosen by the members of Duck's Well Decor Committee. This show will run through April 25th and is free and open to the public from 9AM to 5PM Monday through Friday.
Comedy Tonight!

We all have enjoyed The Lost Colony performance at one point in or another during our visits to the Outer Banks. If you haven't, next time you come it's a must see. "Comedy Tonight!" is a benefit supporting The Lost Colony of Maneto, North Carolina. Experience a night on the town with drinks, dinner, and a silent auction. Heywood Banks is a nationally acclaimed comedian for comic stylings and music. Individual Tickets are priced at $100, but you can also reserve a table of 6 for $1,000. Available auctions items can be previewed on their website along with details on buying tickets.
Pirate Putt Putt for Polio Plus

Kicking off this event is a fishing tournament at $5/child. Kids 12 and under get an hour session of fishing the moat surrounding the golf course. Prizes will be give for the first fish caught and the longest fish caught. As the day goes on, the putt-putt tournament will begin. It's $8 per person to play and helps raise money to spread the word to end polio now! There will also be food for sale for all those scallywags joining in! Afterwards there is a Talk Like a Pirate Party at Pamlico Jack's in Nags Head on April 25th from 5-7pm. It will be a day full of family fun from beginning to end. Photo: Ascencion Photography.
