New to See on the Outer Banks in 2023!

As the summer quickly approaches, the Outer Banks is proud to showcase several exciting activities and locations to add to your bucket list for your vacation arrival!

Headlining the list of new openings on the beach is the advent of Target, ultimately replacing the historic Kmart at 1901 N. Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills. From the store’s opening in early April, visitors and residents alike have flocked with a palpable buzz to the first Target in northeast North Carolina to satisfy their shopping needs. Accompanying the arrival, the store also features a Starbucks and CVS pharmacy for shoppers.

Sticking with the theme of shopping, Southern Shores is excited to welcome Marshalls to the list of new openings in 2023! Located in The Marketplace at Southern Shores, just over the Wright Memorial Bridge, Marshalls offers a wide selection of quality merchandise for shoppers. From grabbing a swimsuit for a day at the beach, or fancy clothes for a night out on the Outer Banks, Marshalls has you covered!

OBX visitors from the North will be greeted with a sense of familiarity traveling to the Outer Banks this year as the Mid-Atlantic staple Royal Farms gas station opened its first location along U.S. 158 in Grandy this spring. Whether dropping in for their world-famous chicken or filling up the tank as you approach the beach, Royal Farms’ new, convenient location provides travelers with everything they need for the brief, final leg of the trip!

Royal Farms isn’t the only gas station expanding to the Outer Banks that beach visitors from the North will recognize! Wawa, the Pennsylvania-based gas station, broke ground this spring on the store’s first North Carolina location across from the new Target. No timetable has been set for its completion yet, but excitement is building at the beach to get a taste of their famed built-to-order food.

With food on our minds, we can’t forget to mention the opening of Blue Moon Beach Grill’s new, 100-seat restaurant. Stop by their new location at 102 E. Dove Street in Nags Head for their Southern comfort food, which they boast comes with a creative twist and flair!

If you just couldn’t get enough of the beach in the past, you’re in luck! With Dare County’s Beach Nourishment project wrapping up completion this spring, you might notice that the Outer Banks beaches are even wider, as sand was pumped from the ocean floor to strengthen eroded areas and preserve the picturesque shorelines.

Whether it’s stopping at your favorite traditional spot, or visiting what’s new on the beach, the Outer Banks offers an extensive list of exciting visits and activities sure to enhance this year’s summer vacation!
